Vowels

Central Catalan has eight vowels. The one that catches everyone: unstressed a and e both become the schwa /ə/, and unstressed o becomes /u/. Stressed e/o are open /ɛ ɔ/ or closed /e o/.

Consonants & habits — the golden rule

Written v = /b/; b, d, g soften between vowels /β ð ɣ/; the final -r of infinitives is silent (parlar /pəɾˈla/); x = /ʃ/, ll = /ʎ/, ny = /ɲ/.

How to use this course (A2)

This is the A2 (Bàsic) course — it continues straight on from A1. We assume you can already read Catalan aloud from the IPA, use the present tense, and handle greetings, numbers and basic descriptions. A2 adds the past tenses, the future and conditional, weak and combined pronouns, and the vocabulary and functions you need to narrate, describe and give opinions — and to pass the official Certificat de nivell bàsic (A2).
